Glen Farm

2020 - 2023: Three years in review

Glen Farm in Portsmouth, a park owned by the Town of Portsmouth, was identified in our 2017 survey of historic buildings and structures on Aquidneck Island as a potential site for stone wall repair. The main entrance to the park on Linden Rd. features two long stretches of historic stone walls that flank the road all the way to the Leonard Brown House. The walls have suffered from years of exposure to the elements and damage from foot traffic due to adjacent fields for youth sports. The Town was eager to contribute funding and resources to train local community members in the art of drystone wall construction to help restore these highly visible walls that greet visitors to the park.

In July 2020, Robert Faraone of Faraone Stonework and Masonry Services trained 20 volunteers over the course of two days, who immediately started a seven-week work program through August. Since then, our volunteer corps has continued to grow in number and skill. Over the course of three volunteer seasons, Robert and volunteers completed over 800 feet of wall repair, transforming the landscape and exhibiting a sense of community stewardship.
