The Aquidneck Stone Wall Initiative launched a volunteer work program in 2020 to provide training and practice in traditional dry stone wall repair. This work emphasizes stone walls as important historical landscape features of Aquidneck Island and equips residents of the area with the necessary skills to help preserve stone walls wherever they go.
Over the course of four years, we significantly impacted the landscapes at Glen Farm and Norman Bird Sanctuary, rebuilding over 2,100 feet of wall. Our volunteers had overwhelmingly positive experiences, enjoying the challenges and the opportunity to work with others safely outdoors during a time of isolation.
